Back to the Photo Archive Main Page								Bill MacCormick and Phil Manzanera had known one another for twelve years before the 801 project came about. They first met at Dulwich College where they were in the same year and, by the 5th Form, in the same group - the legendary (well, in SE21) Pooh and the Ostrich Feather. Bill fancied himself the Jim Morrison of South East London and it wasn't until 1970 that he took up playing bass. By then, Phil and Bill had left Dulwich to form Quiet Sun, the esoteric instrumental band heavily influenced by the Soft Machine. Coincidences are a theme here: Bill's father knew Phil's dad from their shared experience in the then fledgling air line business. Bill met Robert Wyatt and the Soft Machine because Bill's mother worked in the same school as Robert's mum. The world was a lot smaller in those days.
