The 801 played in the early evening
on the Saturday of the 1976 Reading Festival. They shared the day with Manfred
Mann, Van der Graff Generator, Camel and Rory Gallagher. "As we drove down the M4 from London towards Reading the skies opened," recalls Phil, "I can't remember seeing such rain in England very often. The motorway was under water. When we got there, the festival site was a sea of mud and the audience, all 20,000 of them, looked like drowned rats. It was still raining while we warmed up in a backstage caravan and a few drops were falling as we walked up the ramp to the left hand stage. I remember the front of the stage was soaking wet, so we'd all made sure we were wearing rubber-soled shoes. Then, just as I started to play the first notes of 'Lagrima', the sun came out, low down in the sky, directly in front of us to the west. It got one of the biggest cheers of the day and we never looked back." |
