The 801 was designed to fill a musical gap in the Summer of 1976. Originally conceived of by Phil, it fell into shape after he, Brian Eno, Bill MacCormick and brother Ian decamped from London to the proverbial 'house in the country' near Ludlow on the Welsh border.

It was here that line-up and material were identified and plans for performances laid. Having decided to play some material other than their own a long and alcohol fuelled debate began. It was finally resolved when Bill suggested trying 'Tomorrow Never Knows' (and if anyone says differently, I'll sue).

From there, rehearsals took place at Island's offices in Chiswick where Eno learned the joys of playing in 13/8. Final tweaking occurred on a huge film set in Shepperton, Middlesex where early James Bond films had been made.

The rest is history.
